Rifle Caliber/s
I would personally recommend a 300 Win Mag or similar.  Each hunter is however different, so bring the caliber that you are most comfortable with. I would not recommend a smaller caliber than a 270 for the bigger plains game.

Type of Ammunition: The choice is yours. Some good examples would be Nosler Partitions, Swift A – Frames or Barnes X bullets etc,etc. Please, remember you may not bring more than 200 rounds per rifle, and I would recommend not less than 80 rounds per caliber.

Passport
Visiting South Africa does not require a VISA, you just need a valid passport.

All visitors require a passport, valid for no less than 30 days after the expiry of the intended visit. Travelers must ensure passports contain at least one unused page. It is imperative that travelers confirm regulations with their nearest South African embassy or consulate.

Clients will fly into O.R. Tambo International Airport (Johannesburg) or Cape Town International Airport. You will then need a connecting flight to Port Elizabeth or East London where we will be waiting to meet you and take you to camp.
Please make sure that when booking your flights that you have at least a 2-and-a-half-hour layover between flights. Moving from international to domestic can take a while at times and if you have rifles, it does take longer.
NB!!! If you are planning to bring your own Firearms please double check which airlines will transport Firearms within South Africa, before you book your ticket.
There are two Airlines that carry Firearms. One is FlySafair and the other is SA Airlink from Johannesburg and Cape Town to Port Elizabeth or East London.

Please note: There is an additional charge for FlySafair & SA Airlink to carry your Firearms. Please make sure you book well in advance.
We will advise clients who are planning on just doing touring  where to fly into, once your trip has been planned.

Safari Club International is the largest hunting organization in the world. I would highly recommend that you join if you are not a member.

Once you are a member you can enter all your animals into the S.C.I. record book. You will receive a copy of the Safari times once a month and a publication of the safari club magazine every two months. You will also be able to fill in a hunt report form after every hunt which will be published in the safari times.

I am an official master measurer and regardless of whether you want to enter your trophies or not in the record book, they will all be measured before you leave.

We recommend you log onto the official South African Police website www.saps.gov.za for finer details regarding the temporary import of you rifle or www.professionalhunters.co.za for advice and details. Below, we have summarized the basics:

In order to get a temporary import permit for your rifles and ammunition you will need to complete a (SAP 520) form which you can get from the above mentioned website. It is advisable to fill out this form beforehand to save time.

There are additional requirements along with the SAP 520 form, which are as follows:
– NB!!! Certified/Notarized copy of your Passport
– Copy of your airline tickets or itinerary
– NB!!! Certified/Notarized copy of Proof of ownership / license of rifle
– For USA citizens, you need to have a 4457 form stamped by your local authorities, which should be available at your nearest airport. (Please check the date on these forms, as these forms do expire)
– Proof that your firearms have been legally exported. Again, for USA citizens, the 4457 form is acceptable, and for non-USA citizens, either an official export permit or an official affidavit stating the info below from your government agency of residence:

•  First and last name of person as well as passport number
• That they may temporarily export their firearms for hunting purposes to South Africa
• The details of the firearms including the serial numbers
• Amount of ammunition accompanying each caliber
• The dates of their hunting safari”

– Invitation Letter from the Hunting Outfitter which we will provide you.
– Motivation Letter from Client. A short letter to say that you will be hunting with the rifle for the duration of your stay and it will ONLY be used for the purpose of hunting under your PH’s guide.

All of this information is on the SAPS website and if you just follow the steps you should have no problem getting your firearms and ammunition into South Africa. NB!!! Do not sign the SAPS 520 form. It must be signed in front of the police official issuing the actual permit at the airport. The form must be filled in black ink.

On the websites, you will also find the regulations on the actual rifle/s you want to bring in i.e.
– Automatic or Semi-Automatic rifles, pistols or revolvers are not allowed into South Africa.
– You may not bring out two or more of the same calibers.
– No more than 200 rounds of ammunition per person, per firearm, are permitted.
– All ammunition needs to be brought out in a lockable ammo box and transported in your checked luggage.
– You must be older than 21years to be able to obtain a  Temporary Import Permit.

If you decide you would rather make use of a Meet and Greet Service, instead of doing it yourself. We highly recommend you use Hunters Permits Africa. They offer a service at an extra cost and they apply for your temporary import permit beforehand, so when you arrive it is all sorted out. If you wish to avoid all the legalities, we do have rifles for rental at $30,00 per day, with ammunition at cost.

• All bookings will be confirmed in writing and by means of a contract. Should a client decide to leave camp early, full payment is still applicable for the number of days booked.
• A 50% Deposit on the safari is required to confirm your safari booking and the balance to be paid a month before arrival upon which invitation letters will be issued and emailed. This also applies for client’s coming out on a daily rate.
• Please note: We do have Credit Card Facilities and all invoices must be settled in full before departure.
• The deposit is refundable with a 10 % admin charge, provided the safari is cancelled no later than 90 days prior to arrival and a contract has been signed. The deposit becomes non-refundable if a safari is cancelled within the 90 day period or the client has not signed his contract.
• Hunter & Observer rates for the duration of the safari are also need to be paid in full a month before arrival. Should a Hunter or observer/s decide to leave camp early, there is no credit passed for the days they will not be with Andrew Harvey Safaris.
• All payments must be made in Cash, Direct Bank Transfer or by Credit Card.
• Extra animals, whether wounded or lost must be paid for in full at the end of the safari.
• There is no VAT charged on animals if they are being exported. However, there will be 15% VAT charged, on all animals that are not exported.
• All prices are quoted in U.S. Dollars.
• Trophy fees are subject to change without notice due to the exchange rate
• Andrew Harvey Safaris will accept no responsibility for any accidents, negligence, illnesses or loss occurred to clients while on safari. We highly recommend you take out personal insurance to cover yourselves if any of these expenses do occur.
